Generator gas lines
Gas line installation for a standby generator
A standby generator needs a gas supply sized to run it at full load, not just to start it. On a propane system, the line runs from the tank to the generator pad, with regulators to bring the tank pressure down and a shutoff and connection at the generator. On natural gas, the line starts at the utility's meter.
If the natural-gas meter needs an upgrade to carry a generator, that is the gas utility's decision. If there is no gas at the house, the line is quoted together with a propane tank installation. Propane line installation vs a natural gas line
Natural gas arrives through the utility's meter, usually at low pressure. Propane is stored under pressure in the tank and is usually reduced in two stages, by a regulator at the tank and another nearer the house or generator. That difference changes the regulators, and it changes the pipe.
Propane also carries more energy per cubic foot than natural gas, so the same generator can need a different pipe size depending on the fuel. For propane line installation, the tank position fixes where the line starts, so tank placement and line route are planned together.
New appliance locations
Gas lines to a pool heater, range or outdoor kitchen
We also run gas lines to new appliance locations: a pool heater, a gas range, a dryer, a water heater or an outdoor kitchen. We run the line and leave a connection point where the appliance will go. Fitting and connecting the appliance is left to whoever supplies or installs it; we do not install gas appliances, and we do not do natural-gas conversions.
If you are adding an appliance to an existing propane tank, tell us everything that tank already feeds. Each appliance adds to the total load, and a line or regulator that was right for one appliance may be too small for three.
Cost factors
What affects gas line installation cost
Every line is quoted for the job; these are the things that move the estimate.
Length and route
A longer run needs more pipe and labor. The route can matter as much as the distance: going around a pool deck or under a driveway is different from a straight run across a lawn.
Total load
The combined demand of everything on the line, in BTU per hour. A generator plus a pool heater needs more capacity than a generator alone, which can mean a larger pipe.
Fuel and pressure
Propane and natural gas lines are sized from different tables, and a propane system needs its own regulators. The pressure at the start of the line also affects the pipe size.
Buried or on the wall
Underground sections mean trenching, and ground conditions affect how much work that is. Runs along the house need secure supports and protection where the pipe is exposed.
Where the line starts
A line from an existing meter or tank is one scope. Adding a new propane tank makes it a larger project, and any meter upgrade is decided by the gas utility.
Permit and inspection
The gas permit and inspection are part of the job, and requirements differ between municipalities. We pull the permit and arrange the inspection.
Sizing
How a gas line is sized: length and load
A gas line is sized mainly from three things: the total load it has to carry, the length of the run to the farthest appliance and the pressure the line starts at. The fuel gas code's sizing tables turn those, with the allowed pressure drop and the pipe material, into a pipe size. An undersized line can starve a generator as it picks up the house's load, even if it starts and runs with nothing connected.
So the estimate starts with a list: the generator model if you have one, the appliances on the line now and any you plan to add, such as a future outdoor kitchen. Allowing for known future loads now can be simpler than replacing the line later.

Permits, access and what we leave to others
We pull the gas permit under our gas contractor license #24513 and arrange the inspection in-house. Permit timing depends on the municipality and the job, so we do not quote a turnaround. Beyond access to the property, there is nothing you need to arrange.
Leak detection, standalone pressure testing, tank monitoring and propane delivery are not services we offer. How much does gas line installation cost?
It is quoted individually, because the cost depends on the length and route of the line, the total load it feeds, whether it carries propane or natural gas, how much of it is buried and what the permit requires. The written estimate sets out the scope.
Can you run a gas line to my generator from an existing propane tank?
Often, if the tank and regulators can supply the generator on top of whatever they already feed. We look at the tank size, the regulators and the route before quoting. If the existing tank is too small for the runtime you want, a larger tank may be the better answer.
Will you connect my new gas appliance?
No. We run the gas line to the new location and provide the connection point; the appliance is then fitted and connected by its supplier or your appliance installer. That applies to pool heaters, ranges, dryers, water heaters and outdoor kitchen equipment.
Does my natural gas meter need to be upgraded for a generator?
It may. A standby generator adds a large load on top of your existing gas appliances, and the meter may not have been sized for it. Whether it needs an upgrade is the gas utility's decision, not ours. We size and install the line from the meter to the generator.
Can you find a gas leak or pressure-test my existing line?
No. Leak detection and standalone pressure testing are not services we offer. If you notice a gas smell, get everyone outside first and phone your gas utility or propane supplier from there. Testing new piping is part of a permitted installation and its inspection; we just do not sell it as a separate job.
